So, you’ve found your dream home, secured the mortgage and had your offer accepted – well done! Moving in may come with some challenges, but don’t let that dampen your excitement. At Bliss Financial, we have created an in-depth guide to help first-time homeowners navigate bills and fully enjoy their new adventure.

Moving into your new home as a first-time buyer comes with a heap of admin and new bills to think about, including council tax, building insurance, gas, electricity and water. Proper planning and budgeting can really help in the lead-up to your move.

In this blog, we will explain the various bills you may be required to pay when moving into your new property and provide a simple to-do list for setting up your new accounts.

So, what bills do you need to pay when you first move into your new home?

Moving house is an exciting time, but there’s lots to think about. Setting up new accounts and paying your bills should be one of your top priorities – after installing a comfy bed, of course.

You likely have at least some experience with paying bills. However, it’s a whole new ball game when owning the property yourself.

Here are just some of the main bills you will need to set up and pay when moving into your new home:

  • Gas and electricity
  • Council tax
  • Water bills
  • Ground rent (on leasehold properties)
  • Broadband

We have covered the obvious bills, but, of course, there’s much more that comes with the cost of living in your new home. You’ll have mortgage payments to make, potential home insurance costs (which are highly recommended to protect your possessions), and your own bills, such as phone and car insurance.

How do I set up bills for my new property?

Setting up bills for your new home is all part of the moving-in admin. Some of it can be done in the weeks and days leading up to your move, but generally, a lot of it will need to be done once you have moved into your new house.

Before sitting down and picking up the phone or switching on the laptop, you’ll need to have a few details to hand, including your new address, current address, new contact details and an idea of which utility providers you need to contact.

Gas and electricity

If you are currently renting, then updating your gas and electricity suppliers is an essential step before moving into your first home – especially if you want to have a nice hot cup of tea after unpacking!

The first step is to contact your old utility suppliers and let them know you are moving house. This should be done before moving so that all parties are on the same page. The old gas and electricity providers may even be able to give you additional support based on their own processes for home movers.

On that note, you should also notify others of your move, including doctors, banks, broadband provider, driving licence, car insurance policy, employer and, of course, family.

After updating the old providers, the absolute last thing you should do before leaving your old property (besides turning the lights off and locking the door) is take one final meter reading. This will ensure your final bill is accurate and you don’t get any unexpected charges.

Then, once you have picked up the keys and stepped into your new home, you should locate your new meters and take water, gas and electricity meter readings. This will ensure an accurate bill for your first time home.

Council tax

When you move, it is important to let the local council know so they can make sure you are paying them the correct amount. If you are staying in the same area, then you will need to contact your current council. Either way, changing to a new address and updating the local authority is fairly simple.

You should aim to let them know in the weeks or days leading up to your move, and you shouldn’t wait too long, as this can result in an unwanted fine.

You can find more information about how much council tax you need to pay and how to sign up by searching for your local council. All you need is your new address or postcode.

Water bills

Your water bills should also be fairly straightforward since you will most likely be covered by the local water supplier.

Again, if you are currently in rented accommodation, you will need to let your current water supplier know when you are moving house (regardless of whether you change location or stay within the area). More information is likely to be provided on their website.

When moving to a new area, you will need to find your water supplier and contact them to set up an account. If you are sticking with the same provider, then you will need to contact them and provide them with your new address and contact details.

It is a good idea to take a final meter reading before leaving your current property. However, you may need to arrange for someone to do this for you, as most water meters are not within easy access. Likewise, if you have a water meter at the new address, then take a reading when you move in.

When should I switch energy suppliers?

Choosing the right energy supplier can be very beneficial in saving you money, providing better service quality and, as an added bonus, it can be better for the environment.

But you may be wondering, how exactly do I find the best suppliers? And how do I know who can provide the best deal?

If you are moving house, then this is a great time to start looking around for an energy supplier.

Firstly, you should look to see who the supplier is for your new home so you can shop around and compare deals. You might already know who the utility suppliers are for your new property, and that’s great. If not, you can always ask the seller or estate agent.

If you have already moved into your new home before choosing a new supplier or transferring your old one, then you will most likely start using the existing supplier and be put on a standard tariff, which is usually more expensive.

If this is the situation, then it is a good idea to start looking around or speak to the energy provider and see if they have a better deal available.

Can I save money on my utility bills?

As a first-time buyer, you will have already spent a lot of money before even stepping foot in your new home. So, saving money on utility bills is probably appealing to you.

You’ll also be happy to know that there are a few things that first-time homeowners can do to make better savings and fully enjoy their new home.

  • Invest in energy-efficient appliances: You can decrease your energy bill by investing in more sustainable appliances because they tend to use less energy. Look for appliances with higher EER or EPC labels. More energy-efficient homes tend to have better rates from energy providers.
  • Take regular meter readings: Your household bills tend to be most accurate when you provide the suppliers with regular meter readings. It is a good idea to locate your water and energy meters so that you can stay on top of your bills and be more aware of your usage.
  • Use a thermostat control: Installing a thermostat control can help regulate your heating and provide more efficient energy usage by programming it to change the temperature when you are not in.
  • Install a smart meter: Getting a smart meter is a great way to reduce your energy bill, as it tracks your energy usage and automatically sends meter readings to your suppliers.
  • Create a good budget plan: It’s always smart to prioritise your finances before moving into a new home or even before securing a mortgage. By creating a detailed budget that works for you, you’ll have a clear idea of your monthly outgoings and be well-prepared for the costs that come with homeownership.
